IB Chemistry HL
Grades 11-12
4 credits
Prerequisite:Biology I, Chemistry I, and Algebra II (may be taken concurrently with this course) (Required grades: an A in each science course or a B- or above in each honors science course)
Higher level IB Chemistry is a rigorous pre-university course in chemistry. The curriculum is similar in philosophy to the IB SL Chemistry Curriculum, the depth and breadth of each topic covered is greater. The curriculum is grounded in concept-based teaching and learning, and is designed to foster critical thinking. As the course progresses, the combination of lecture and lab experiences will facilitate students in developing a familiarity with problem solving, lab techniques, scientific inquiry and the role of uncertainty and error in scientific investigations. Also, the application of technology to experimental processes will be explored. Finally, students will share their particular content expertise in a collaborative sciences project, and in an independently researched and designed lab project. This course is designed to prepare students for success in college chemistry. A list of topics covered can be provided upon request.
