COURSE DESCRIPTION

Percussion Ensemble
Grades 9-12

1 credit
Prerequisite: Application & Interview Process, Prior experience singing or playing any musical instrument

This ensemble develops performance skills and provides students with a balanced comprehensive study of music through the percussion (melodic and non-melodic) and rhythm instruments such as piano, bass and guitar. The focus of this course is to provide percussion specific techniques, experiences and is designed for beginning to advanced percussionists. Students will work in chamber groups and large ensembles to transfer learned skills in the community of Guerin High School and a competitive format through the Indiana Percussion Association. This ensemble will perform in the IPA competition (4-5) Saturdays of the year in the 2nd & 3rd trimester (Feb-April). Please note that some IPA performance dates will be during the 3rd trimester. Participation in the winter concert, competitive IPA & ISSMA solo and ensemble events are required for a passing grade. Students will rehearse for performances during class daily as well as some after school rehearsals. Students will learn basic fundamentals, comprehensive warm-ups, a 4-6 minute competitive show, and noncompetitive winter concert music.
