COURSE DESCRIPTION

Spanish for Heritage Speakers I (Honors)
Grade 9-12
2 credits
Prerequisite: Students that are heritage or native speakers of Spanish (have grown up in families where Spanish is the primary or one of the primary languages spoken in the home) are eligible to take this course. Placement test and teacher approval required. An interview may be requested.

This course is taught completely in Spanish and is designed to help students make large gains in their Spanish language abilities and in their confidence in using the language. Students will expand their Spanish reading and presentational skills, improve their ability to use varied oral and written registers in Spanish and build vocabulary while exploring issues related to Latino/Hispanic identity, heritage, community, and culture. Students will learn norms of academic written Spanish and develop writing skills in both creative and expository writing. Students will explore authentic, varied genres of literature at different lexile levels and current events articles from various Hispanic and Latino cultures. Through reading, they will become aware of the literary devices used in writing as well as variants of Spanish used in different settings. In addition, students will work to understand linguistic choice in order to become more confident in their use of language for different settings and audiences.
