Latin I lays the basic foundation for reading Latin literature. In this class students will begin to master basic vocabulary, morphology, and syntax. Early exercises will focus on mastery of basic forms of nouns and verbs. Once basic mastery of word forms has developed, students will begin to read and translate short excerpts of authentic Latin. Translation serves as a tool to cement students’ grasp of Latin grammar with the goal of developing reading fluency. These excerpts will also guide the investigation of historical, religious and cultural elements of Roman society.
