Latin American Studies provides an understanding of and appreciation for the diverse peoples, cultures and economies of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean nations. Content includes geographical and historical factors that have influenced contemporary situations. Topics of study include: the development of pre-Columbian civilizations, European colonial systems and resulting institutions, the development of independent nations and governments, and current issues. This course will examine 20th-century Latin American history through a Catholic worldview and will also critically examine the historical impact of the United States in the region, fostering a thoughtful perspective on global responsibility and ethical leadership.
