IMPACT 2020

Leading (and Learning) Through Quarantine Friday, August 14, 2020, was the start of the 17th school year for Guerin Catholic. It also marked the 153rd day since our last in-person school day on Friday, March 13, 2020. That is exactly five full months of time that elapsed and taught us all too well that the best part of our school—why we exist—is our students! I know that I have forgotten more than I remember about all the discussions, mostly over Zoom, that took place during the time of quarantine. What I do remember during those twenty-two weeks we were without our students is the power of our community, especially in the time of need. Guerin Catholic is an amazing place filled with remarkable people who love Christ and their neighbors and who have amazing stories of faith. Our faculty and staff, in partnership with our students and their families, continued to execute our mission during a global pandemic and when we were isolated from each other. How was this possible? This is a question I have been personally reflecting on, especially since this situation has reminded us that we are not in control. The thing I knew from past experience in schools is it is people, not programs, that make a great school. We certainly have great people, so it is no surprise that we have a great school, even during a worldwide crisis. What I learned from our great people during this difficult time is how we do it, and here is how: We trust in God’s Divine Providence, the Gospel, and each other. We seek the Truth, God’s will, a personal relationship with Jesus, and beauty. We serve each other with love, and especially those in need. In 1973 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote, To Teach as Jesus Did: A Pastoral Message on Catholic Education. This timeless work continuously underscores the three-fold mission of our Catholic schools: l to proclaim the Gospel, l to build community, and l to serve our brothers and sisters. At Guerin Catholic, this is our mission. This is what we do; whether we are on campus and in-person or isolated and hunkered down at home, our great people who make up our amazing community continually strive to Trust, Seek, and Serve!
