IMPACT 2019

#thisiswhy On Friday August 16, 2019, St. Theodore Guerin High School welcomed students to the first day of a school year for the sixteenth time. Not planned, but of no surprise to anyone who has experienced the providential influence of Guerin Catholic, this was fifteen years to the date of the very first day of school on August 16, 2004. As we look back on our fifteen young years, it is easy to be amazed and proud of what we have accomplished, the obstacles we have overcome, and the lives that have been changed by the mission we call Guerin Catholic High School. However, a deeper dive calls us to evaluate our fifteen years not only by what we have accomplished, but also to look at how have we accomplished it; which like our patroness is through a complete and utter trust in providence. The initial leaders, families, faculty, and staff who made Guerin Catholic a reality were not only visionaries: they were bold, they were risk takers, and they were people of deep faith. They did not let fear, stress, or setbacks deter them from realizing their dream of bringing a Catholic high school to Hamilton County. Knowing the risks and uncertainty our founding families, supporters, faculty, and staff faced in the quest to make Guerin Catholic a reality and the sacrifice so many continue to make to keep Guerin Catholic thriving, I am drawn to a richer reflection beyond the how and to an understanding of why a few would be so committed to what many thought impossible. I have been fortunate to hear individual stories inspirationally articulated as to why Guerin Catholic is so important to so many. The consistent themes can be summarized in the following values: faith, family, community, learning, leadership, achievement, service, and eternal salvation. Ultimately, the differentiator between the dream and the reality, between excellence and mediocrity, between the why, how, and what, is someone who cares enough to take action to make it happen. This is why Guerin Catholic opened its doors on August 16, 2004—there was a committed group of people who cared enough to make it happen. This is why Guerin Catholic has grown into an amazing and thriving Catholic high school—our community cares enough to make it happen. As we look to the future and to the next fifteen years of changing lives through authentic Catholic education, it is my prayer and hope that our actions in all things clearly communicate our why—we care!
