IMPACT 2019

17 GUERINCATHOLIC.ORG by Laura (McKamey) Craver ’09 Just over ten years ago, Scott Craver ’09 and I, along with 98 classmates, queued beside the stage at Guerin Catholic’s third commencement ceremony. We felt fully grown and ready to rocket out of the Indianapolis area, on to greater adventures. Scott had a scholarship to play soccer at St. Joseph’s College while studying Forensic Science. My desire to escape the monotony of the Hoosier State would take me up the hill in Steubenville (OH), where I planned to study theology. We could never have predicted where the road would take us from there. The truth is, Scott and I were a bit of an unusual match. The Venn diagram of our lives just didn’t intersect in any significant way, and I imagine our paths would never have crossed if it weren’t for our time at Guerin Catholic. Oddly enough, we coexisted gracefully throughout our four years of high school, and even danced together at swing lessons during Kairos—all without getting to know each other one bit. Thankfully, the intimate community at Guerin Catholic created a climate of friendship. After acting as student leaders in the March for Life trip in 2009 (see “Then” photo above), Scott and I began to chat in the hallways before school. Our hallway small talk turned into long walks on the Monon, summer concerts at Cool Creek and picnics at Holliday Park. The summer after we graduated from Guerin Catholic was the beginning of a lifetime together and I will always cherish those moments. I imagine it was our differences that made us strong. Scott was an athlete, a tech nerd, a selective slacker, and he sported the “best hair” of 2009. I was bookish, tightly wound, and voted “Most Likely to Have a Religious Vocation.” We intrigued each other and our strengths complemented each other’s weaknesses. Over the past decade, that strength has carried us through pregnancy loss, unthinkable work schedules, intense sleep deprivation and so much more. No matter where the road takes us, we feel forever grateful for Guerin Catholic. Our high school not only gave us each other, but also laid the path for our future successes. Now we have everything we hoped and prayed for as we turned our tassels all those years ago—marriage, three vibrant children, and careers that engage and challenge us. Not to mention a safety net of lifelong friendships that have supported us through our darkest moments. Moreover, as an Emergency Physician, Scott has the unique privilege of walking the line between life and death everyday. Guiding other families through their scariest moments is his greatest strength and a privilege we owe largely to the excellent education he received at Guerin Catholic. In a sense, we owe everything to Guerin Catholic! Laura (McKamey) Craver ’09 is a freelance writer and mother of three. She and Scott Craver ’09 live in Detroit, MI where he is finishing up his last year of medical training. After seven years of marriage, four pregnancies, five moves, and seven hundred sleepless nights, they’re finally making preparations to be “back home again in Indiana.” Scott Craver ’09 and Laura (McKamey) Craver ’09 Scott Craver ’09, former emo punk rocker and the Class of 2009’s “Best Hair,” is an Emergency Physician in Detroit, MI. Laura (McKamey) Craver ’09, formerly “Most Likely to Have a Religious Vocation,” is now “Super-mom” and a very patient resident’s wife. Their three future Golden Eagles— Merryn, Azalea, and Linus— will probably be voted “Most Talkative”, “Best Curls”, and “Sweetest Smile”. OurStory GCMatrimony NOW THEN Photo by Bob Nichols
