The 2019-20 school year brought us a new Chaplain—Fr. John Nguyen. Born in a refugee camp in Hong Kong, his family immigrated to California when he was a child. They later moved to Carmel, IN and he is a graduate of Carmel High School. Fr. John attended Purdue University for three years prior to entering seminary at Marian University. After graduating from Marian, he enlisted in the United States Army and, after completing his enlistment, he continued his seminary formation at St. Meinrad. He was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana on June 3, 2017, and is in residence at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Noblesville. In addition to providing the sacraments, Father has accompanied students and staff on mission trips, pilgrimages, and most recently went skydiving with a group of staff from Guerin Catholic! (see pg. 6) Fr. John is such a blessing to Guerin Catholic! In addition to first trimester finals, November features a time of gratitude which starts with Service Day and ends with the Because We Are Grateful (BWAG) program on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break. On November 14, students, faculty and staff began with All-School Mass and then divided and conquered to “Serve with Love” at nearly 40 sites around Central Indiana. The service continued throughout the month as donations were collected for five local organizations—Birthright of Cicero, Helping Our Own People (HOOP), the Noblesville Boys and Girls Club, the Little Sisters of the Poor, and Miracle Place. BWAG finished on November 26 with All-School Mass, student speakers on gratitude, and the distribution of the donations to the organizations. CampusMinistry ServewithLove A group of 25 students and chaperones from the Guerin Catholic community traveled to Cincinnati for the annual Fall Break Mission Trip. The group assisted the Franciscan Daughters of Mary at their Rose Garden Mission, as well as delivered furniture with New Life Furniture to people overcoming homelessness, domestic abuse, and extreme poverty, and learned about sustainable practices and community building at Tikkun Farm. The trip allowed the group to authentically experience prayer, community, service, and simplicity together.
