THEODORE GUERIN | October 3, 2017 Guerin Catholic High School celebrated the Feast Day of our Patroness St. Theodore Guerin, with All-School Mass and a Eucharistic Procession. To view a video of the procession, visit GuerinCatholic.org. In the video, Guerin Catholic’s Chaplain Fr. Thomas J. Haan explains the origins of the Eucharistic Procession, Mother Theodore’s tender love of the Blessed Sacrament, and his hopes for the students of Guerin Catholic. “The Eucharistic Procession show us that He is present among us and showering us with His graces. My hope is that the students kneeling see our Lord in the Eucharist coming through the hallways and it helps them remember that Jesus Christ is present in our school. He is present in our hallways. He is present in our classrooms. That they can act accordingly. That they would see Him, perceive Him, and be Him in our hallways. I also hope for the seniors, who are privileged to process with the Eucharist outside the school for a brief time, to always remember that their faith can never remain in the chapel. Their faith must be lived, must be taken out into the school and even outside the school indeed, wherever they go.” What a beautiful day at Guerin Catholic! We are so blessed!

At Guerin Catholic we strive to create adult leaders who will serve the Lord in all ways possible. In this issue of Impact, please enjoy the wonderful stories of some of our graduates who have ventured out in humble confidence as they hone their talents against the needs of the world. In such a short time our alumni have blossomed for all the world to see. It is our hope that because of this miracle of faith we call Saint Theodore Guerin High School, the world might better see Christ’s loving heart, feel His healing touch, and hear the beauty of His Word. Off they go into the world to be servant leaders, trusting in His providence. It is because of your prayerful trust in God’s providence that we exist. Please continue to lift us up to the Lord so that we can continue to train these God-given intellects with the highest of truth so that they can reflect our God to others. Thank you for your generosity and please continue to hold us close so that we can continue to answer God’s call in Catholic education. May God continue to bless you, Paul S. Lunsford President Off they go into the world to be servant leaders, trusting in His providence. President’s Message

Simply Blessed Awards&Recognition CHAMPION OF CHARACTER SCHOOL OF DISTINCTION Guerin Catholic was recognized by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) as a 2016-17 IHSAA Sportsmanship Award winner. Guerin Catholic was recognized for exemplary behavior during the previous year. Many IHSAA member schools met the point value of 100 or better, but few completed the entire Sportsmanship program. Guerin Catholic met or exceeded all five criteria of the IHSAA/NAIA Character Challenge program. Congratulations to the student athletes, parents and coaches for continuing to live out the Guerin Catholic vision of Leading with Humility, Serving with Love, and Trusting in Providence. NATIONAL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ASSOCIATION STRENGTH OF AMERICA AWARD Congratulations to our Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Jaime Waymouth, on winning the National Strength and Conditioning Association Strength of America Award! The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition announced Guerin Catholic as a 2017 Strength of America award recipient in June. The award recognized Guerin Catholic to have represented the gold standard in strength and conditioning programs. Led by Coach Waymouth to improve the school’s curriculum, Guerin Catholic was measured in four major categories: Supervision, Education, Program, and Facilities. Selected from hundreds of eligible schools, Guerin Catholic was honored during the NSCA’s National Conference Awards Banquet on July 14, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Golden Eagles circle around their nest, moving further and further away, but never forgetting where they came from.” - Jack Freiburger ’16 and Nick Kennedy ’16 Class of 2016 Class Presidents DID YOU KNOW? Guerin Catholic ranks #1 in the state of Indiana for number of students participating in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. While the IB program cultivates internationalism and respect for other cultures, it also adapts to the local environment and allows students to maintain a strong sense of cultural identity. Students are taught to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged citizens, who gain practical experience of being part of an international community. IB Diploma Coordinator Mrs. Meaghan Neman, states: “The IB Programme at Guerin Catholic integrates beautifully with the goals of Catholic education. While seeking to produce informed, faith-filled graduates, we also want them to be critical thinkers looking at the world with an eye for change, not complacence.” Classof2016 Golden Eagle Sculpture A solid bronze Golden Eagle, sculpted by well-known wildlife sculptor Mike Curtis, was installed next to “The Nest,” Guerin Catholic’s football field, in August 2017. The sculpture is a gift to the school from the Class of 2016.

SamGardner’08 Whenever the opportunity presents itself—and it seems to present itself most often in front of large groups—Guerin Catholic Boys Basketball Coach Pete Smith tells one of two stories about me. The first story focuses on my inauspicious and short-lived high school football career. During one of several lopsided defeats in 2004, I found myself on the front line of the kickoff return team. Within seconds after our opponent kicked the ball, I also found myself pancaked on the ground like Vince Vaughn in the movie Wedding Crashers. Coach Smith watched from the stands as I lay on the ground and an assistant coach politely told me that my days as a football player were numbered. Although Coach Smith claims there is a moral to the story, other than humiliation, I have yet to find it. The second story focuses on my non-existent middle school basketball career. Despite a passion for the sport, as a relatively slow player with no discernible skill set, I was cut from my public school’s basketball team in both seventh and eighth grades. To hear Coach Smith tell it, I came to Guerin Catholic motivated to turn my adversity into a triumph and make my first basketball team. Due largely to the new opportunity Guerin Catholic provided me (and a helpful growth spurt), I started nearly every game I played for the Golden Eagles and ultimately played college basketball at Wittenberg University. Alumni Spotlight Guerin Catholic Class of 2008 Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Wittenberg University Class of 2012 Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Class of 2015 Sam Gardner ’08 and Katie (Regan) Gardner ’10

The part of the story that Coach Smith leaves out is that my academic and social pursuits at my public middle school were equally unpromising. Often a subpar student, I ended eighth grade with multiple Cs (or worse) on my report card. During most semesters, I had no involvement in any extra-curricular activities. Worse still, I had yet to find many peers at school who shared my interests or challenged me to improve myself. Guerin Catholic represented more than an athletic opportunity for me; it represented an opportunity to meet my academic potential, to discover interests other than sports, to form more meaningful relationships, and to start over. I found all of the above at Guerin Catholic. With guidance from invested teachers and through the International Baccalaureate program, I earned an academic scholarship at Wittenberg University and later graduated summa cum laude from college and law school. I participated in (among many other activities) GoldenVoice and the musicals – unique experiences that helped launch my confidence in order to pursue a career in law. I met lifelong friends, including my beautiful wife Katie (Regan) Gardner ’10. But perhaps most importantly, I found a renewed sense of self and faith at Guerin Catholic. I am who I am today largely because of Guerin Catholic. As the chair of the new Guerin Catholic Alumni Council and the alumni representative on the School Governing Board, my goal is to ensure that Guerin Catholic can continue to serve that role for its students. What separates Guerin Catholic from other schools in the area (private and public) is the opportunities it provides to its students, the close-knit nature of the community, and the school’s commitment to its mission. Although the Alumni Council is still in its relative infancy, the most important of our many objectives is to preserve Guerin Catholic’s unique identity as the school continues to grow and develop. To all who have helped make Guerin Catholic the place it is and was, thank you. To any alumni who are interested in helping the Alumni Council in some capacity moving forward, please contact me at samuelbgardner@gmail.com. Alumni Spotlight
