MESSAGE TO PARENTS of JUNIORS and SENIORS

August 19, 2008

Dear Parents of Guerin Catholic Juniors and Seniors:

Greetings from the Guerin Catholic Guidance Office! We are very excited to continue to work with you and your student on the college selection process, and are enjoying the positive energy, enthusiasm and earnestness that the students are exhibiting. I hope the following information will be beneficial to you in understanding what your child will experience this Term from the College Counseling Department.

College Visits at Guerin Catholic High School:
Each fall, Guerin Catholic High School is visited by schools from around the U.S. The visiting admissions officer is frequently involved in reading GCHS applications and may have an important role in the admission of Guerin Catholic candidates. Both junior and senior students are encouraged to attend as many of these meetings as possible. Many, but not all visits take place during KAIROS at 10:30 a.m. Please check your Naviance website at https://connection.naviance.com/guerin  for the latest calendar of college visits. Students must sign-up in Naviance to attend so make sure your child has registered to attend the visit. The schedule is changed and updated frequently, sometimes daily, so please check back regularly for updates and/or changes.

Colleges that Change Lives Tours
When acclaimed education writer Loren Pope first set out to share with students, families, and counselors his thoughts about colleges, his goal was to provide insights that would allow people to make more informed choices.

After much research, Mr. Pope began championing a small group of less well-known colleges for their life-changing success with students. These 40 colleges and universities—two public and 38 private from 24 states and with enrollments ranging from 350 to 4,000—were recognized in the book Colleges That Change Lives. These schools will be on tour September 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fountains in Carmel.

The CTCL schools are a group of distinctive colleges and universities, each of which is unique in its own right. But, as Pope notes in the book,- “these schools share two essential elements: a familial sense of communal enterprise that gets students heavily involved in cooperative rather than competitive learning, and a faculty of scholars devoted to helping young people develop their powers, mentors who often become their valued friends.”

Please make time to learn more about these colleges by attending the tour on September 11th at the Fountains in Carmel. It will be well worth your time.

Save the Date
On Thursday, September 18th, all juniors and seniors who have passed ISTEP are required to arrange a college visit. This college visit is mandatory in order to miss school and does not count as one of the two permitted college visits. This may be done in one of two ways:

  • Option 1. Your child may pick up a registration form in the Guidance Department to attend a visit that has been prearranged by Guerin Catholic to Hanover College in

Hanover, Indiana. U.S. News and World Report ranks Hanover College’s academic program among the top 100 best liberal arts colleges in the nation. This school, located on a bluff in Hanover, IN overlooks the Ohio River. This trip will include a tour, information session and lunch. There is no additional cost to your child. If your student plans on taking this trip, he or she will need to pick up a permission slip in the Guidance Office.

  • Option 2. You may prearrange a visit independently directly with a college or university your child may be interested in attending. As long as the students have made official arrangements through the college or university, no forms are required to be returned to Guerin Catholic.  It is highly recommended that you make calls to arrange these visits ASAP as many colleges fill up their visit schedules as many high schools utilize this day in a similar fashion.

I look forward to seeing our students working hard and taking advantage of all these opportunities.

Sincerely,

Martin Kirkwood
